The library is pleased to announce the newest addition to its permanent art collection: Summer, Batavia Road, Warrenville, Illinois, a vibrant painting generously donated by artist William Scarlato. A long-time Warrenville resident and Professor of Art Emeritus at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois, Mr. Scarlato brings a deep connection to the local landscape.
The scope of Mr. Scarlato’s work spans a rich variety of subjects, including landscapes, still life, figure painting and abstraction. He works primarily in oil painting and the printmaking techniques of etching, engraving and lithography. Mr. Scarlato’s passion for painting stems from his teaching experience in England in the 1980s, where the beauty of the countryside inspired him to set aside his modernist tendencies and embrace the landscape with fresh eyes. His experience abroad renewed his appreciation for the natural beauty found right here in Warrenville.
We are honored to showcase this piece by a noted artist, as Mr. Scarlato holds a BFA from Northern Arizona University and an MFA from Yale University and has taught in colleges in New Hampshire and West Sussex, England.
Visitors are invited to view Summer, Batavia Road, Warrenville, Illinois, now on display on the south wall of the Adult Services area. This painting joins a growing collection of artwork, including sculptures, on display throughout the library, including works by other prominent local artists such as Malvin "Zsissly" Albright and Adam Emory Albright.

Ms. Fillers draws inspiration from both nature and urban environments, focusing on themes such as landscapes both real and imagined, cityscapes, atmospheric scenes and coastal areas shaped by water. Her passion lies in outdoor photography, where she enjoys capturing fleeting moments in nature. Alice often uses original photos as templates for creating paper collages and stitched designs.
Handmade papers are the primary medium in this exhibit. Ms. Fillers particularly enjoys the process of selecting papers based on color, texture (both rough and smooth) and surface treatment, sharing about her artwork. She likes to share that her work is “a healthy stash of unique papers and collage journals inspires a mix and match of subtle color combinations. Allowing the paper to express itself and make its own decisions is freeing for them, and the outcome is always an unexpected surprise.” Many of the techniques and finishes she applies to her work include hand and machine stitching, heating and even baking.
Ms. Fillers ideas are shaped by the works of artists like Matisse’s paper cutouts, Elizabeth Keith’s lithographed Asian themes and even song lyrics such as "In the City” and "Moonraker.”
